Ontotropic Art Gallery
The relation to reality
is the medium.
Ontotropic Art is made to change how we meet the world.
EnterMost art gives us something to look at.
Ontotropic Art asks what happens when the work changes the way we look, attend, feel, orient ourselves — and finally, the way reality is experienced.
What is
Ontotropic Art?
Ontotropic Art is art created with a deliberate effect on the participant’s orientation toward reality, self and experience.
Its material can be almost anything: paint, stone, print, sound, light, code, movement, architecture, silence. But the physical material is only part of the work. Attention can be composed. Time can be stretched. Perception can be unsettled. A familiar room can become strange. A thought can become difficult to leave.
The work does not need a common visual language. What unites Ontotropic Art is not a style. It is a purpose.
What is being?
What can art do to our orientation toward being?
Seven propositions.
- 01
The relation between a person and reality can itself be an artistic medium.
- 02
A work may be judged not only by what it represents, but by the kind of seeing, attention or experience it makes possible.
- 03
Perception is active. We build the world as we encounter it. Art can work inside that process.
- 04
Attention, intention, memory, embodiment and the sense of time can be composed as deliberately as colour, form or sound.
- 05
Ontotropic Art can be quiet or violent, analogue or technological, beautiful or severe. It has no prescribed aesthetic.
- 06
It can meet philosophy, psychology, cognitive science, contemplative practice and technology without becoming an illustration of any of them.
- 07
The object is not always the end of the work. Sometimes the work is what becomes possible in the participant.
An old word.
A new movement.
We did not invent the word ontotropic.
It appears in twentieth-century writing on perception. Friedrich Sander used the idea of “ontotropic tendencies”; Egon Brunswik later discussed that lineage in his 1956 work on perception.
OAG takes the word somewhere else: into art.
Ontotropic Art names a practice concerned not only with what is perceived, but with the orientation of the perceiver toward reality itself.
Historical source ↗A gallery built
for a movement.
Ontotropic Art Gallery is being established in Kraków as the first permanent gallery devoted exclusively to Ontotropic Art.
It will exhibit different artists, media and visual languages. The programme is held together by one question: does the work change the participant’s relation to reality?
OAG will commission new work, exhibit it, document it, publish around it and build an international conversation around the movement. Exhibitions will be joined by residencies, research, talks and collaborations across disciplines.
The gallery begins in Kraków. The movement is not meant to stay there.
Not a house style.
Not a technique.
Not a theme.
A cause.
Every sale should
make the movement stronger.
OAG is not being built as a conventional dealer. Its founding economic principle is simple: most of the gallery’s net sale proceeds go back into Ontotropic Art.
Founding allocation of net sale proceeds after taxes and direct transaction-specific costs.
